ifconfig eth0:1 up 10.1.1.2
but i found out you can also do
ip addr add 10.1.1.2/24 dev eth0
HOWEVER and this is the gotcha if you use the second variant you CAN’T use ifconfig -a to see that added alias – you need to use ip addr list
